Substance Abuse Prevention

Drug testing in the military enhances readiness. Illegal drug use impairs our ability to protect and defend Maryland's interests, and the interests of the United States around the world. It impacts our safety, detracts from our many critical missions, and reduces professionalism and pride of the members of the greatest military force in history.

On a monthly basis, a certain percentage of traditional and active duty National Guard Soldiers and Airmen are randomly selected for drug testing to permit commanders to assess the security, military fitness, unit readiness, and good order and discipline of their commands. The program also identifies those individuals who use or abuse illegal and prescription substances that may be referred for treatment.
